Great Falls' holiday events are spread across a few public sites: the library and Grange on Georgetown Pike, Village Field behind the post office, Colvin Run Mill on Route 7, and Riverbend Park. On most of the season's busiest days, the times line up so one event ends before the next begins.
Here are the pairings. Veterans Day matches a morning ceremony with a fee-free day at the park. December 6 and December 13 each have an afternoon at Colvin Run Mill that wraps up just before an event on Georgetown Pike. December 18 runs from Riverbend Park's nature center into a lantern tour at the mill. Below is the season, one double-booked day at a time.
The calendar, as pairs
- Wednesday, November 11. The Veterans Day ceremony runs 11 a.m. to noon at the Great Falls Freedom Memorial. The same day is an NPS fee-free day at Great Falls Park for U.S. citizens and residents.
- Saturday and Sunday, November 21–22. Great Falls Studios holds Holiday ArtFest at a new venue this year.
- Sunday, December 6. Children's Holiday Shopping at Colvin Run Mill runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Celebration of Lights on Village Field starts at 4.
- Sunday, December 13. Santa at the Mill runs 12:30 to 4 p.m. The Great Falls Philharmonic's "A Great Falls Christmas" begins at 4 p.m. at the Great Falls Grange.
- Friday, December 18. Family Fun Friday at Riverbend Park's Nature Center runs noon to 5 p.m. The first Holiday Lantern Tour at Colvin Run Mill starts at 6:30.
On the December 13 pairing, the gap is zero. Santa at the Mill ends at exactly the hour the Philharmonic starts, so going to both means skipping the end of one or the start of the other. The rest of the list has real breathing room.
November 11 starts behind the library
The Great Falls Freedom Memorial sits behind Great Falls Library at 9830 Georgetown Pike. Parking is in the library lot. The ceremony is open to everyone, and organizers especially invite veterans. Celebrate Great Falls Foundation encourages attendees to bring portable chairs, though it doesn't require them. The memorial was created in 2004 to honor everyone who has served. It particularly remembers Great Falls residents who died in service, including six on September 11, 2001.
The rain plan is the detail to remember. If the weather turns, the ceremony moves next door into the Great Falls Grange, with limited seating and shelter. The Grange comes back into this calendar in December.
The ceremony ends at noon, which leaves most of the afternoon for the park on a day with no entrance fee. On regular days, the NPS fee page lists a $20 private-vehicle pass and says the park doesn't take cash. Grounds, overlooks and trails are open from 7 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset, and the visitor center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The NPS warns that the entrance at Georgetown Pike and Old Dominion Drive may close for a while when parking fills and reopen as spaces free up, so give yourself time on a holiday with no entrance fee. Climbers should know that the Aid Box climbing area is closed until further notice. A rock topple made most of its established routes inaccessible.
A new venue for ArtFest, and a familiar name on the lighting program
Holiday ArtFest moves this year to St. Francis Episcopal Church at 9220 Georgetown Pike, November 21 and 22. As of now, Great Falls Studios lists the dates and the new location but says further details are "coming soon," with no hours posted yet.
St. Francis turns up again two weeks later. On the Celebration of Lights program, the St. Francis Creche performs first, at 4:00.
December 6: shopping at the mill, then the tree
Colvin Run Mill at 10017 Colvin Run Road holds Children's Holiday Shopping on Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. On Sunday, an hour after it closes, the free Celebration of Lights begins on Great Falls Village Field behind the post office.
The lighting runs on a tight schedule, and arrival time decides what children get to do:
| Time | What's happening |
|---|---|
| 4:00–5:45 p.m. | Pony rides, petting zoo, treats from Celebrate Great Falls Foundation sponsors, letters to Santa |
| 4:00–5:45 p.m. | Performances by St. Francis Creche, King's Kids and Christ the King Choir, Village Green Day School, Mina's School, Great Falls United Methodist Preschool |
| 5:00–5:10 p.m. | Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive by fire truck to light the tree |
| 5:15 p.m. | Great Falls Elementary School performs |
| 5:15–6:00 p.m. | Visits with Santa |
| 5:45 p.m. | Live Nativity; petting zoo and pony rides close |
| 6:00 p.m. | Wrap-up |
The foundation says Santa visits end promptly at 6:00. If the weather is bad, the tree still gets lit, but the other activities won't be rescheduled. Families coming from the mill have an hour between the two. That's enough time to drive over and still catch the pony rides before they close at 5:45.
December 13: Santa at the Mill, then the Grange fills
Colvin Run Mill hosts Santa at the Mill twice: Saturday, December 12, from 12:45 to 5 p.m., and Sunday, December 13, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. On Saturday, nothing in the village competes with it. Sunday, the mill's hours end at 4, the same time the Grange program begins.
The Grange, the same building that serves as the Veterans Day rain site, hosts the Great Falls Philharmonic's "A Great Falls Christmas" at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 13. The Philharmonic lists tickets at $60. The Eventbrite listing shows a slightly higher total, a 4 to 5:30 p.m. program, doors at 3:40, and the Grange at 9818 Georgetown Pike. If you have concert tickets, Saturday is the easier day for Santa.
December 18 and after: the season moves to dusk
Riverbend Park's Nature Center at 8700 Potomac Hills Street runs Family Fun Fridays from noon to 5 p.m. on November 13, November 27 and December 18. November 27 is the day after Thanksgiving. December 18 is the day the nature center's afternoon gives way to Colvin Run Mill's evening programs. The mill's last week of events:
- Holiday Lantern Tours: Friday, December 18, 6:30–8 p.m., and Saturday, December 19, 5:30–7 p.m.
- Holiday Greetings: Saturday, December 19, 3–3:30 p.m., which ends two hours before that evening's lantern tour
- Holiday Wrappings, and Candy Canes and Cocoa: Monday, December 21, both 10–11:30 a.m.
More is coming at the mill after the holidays. The Fairfax County Park Authority Board approved a fiberglass bridge and trail that will connect the northern and southern sections of Colvin Run Mill Park through the Route 7 tunnel. The Great Falls Citizens Association's 2026 annual report says construction is planned for fall 2026, with completion targeted for spring 2027. Next year's lantern tours may have a new way in.
The season's one hard stop is at the park. Great Falls Park and its visitor center close on Christmas Day.
Where to eat between events
This year, the village core gained a new kitchen on the same stretch of Georgetown Pike as the library and Grange. Great Falls Lodge Bar & Grill at 9835 Georgetown Pike soft-launched on September 7, initially serving dinner from 3 to 10 p.m. after permit and inspection delays, according to the McLean Ledger. FFXnow reported that lunch and happy hours would follow. The restaurant's website now lists daily hours of 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and weekend brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. It also still describes a curated soft-launch menu, with the full dining experience promised for October. Call ahead before planning a post-concert dinner around a specific dish.
For an early start before the Veterans Day ceremony or a mill morning, Toastique at 9891 Georgetown Pike in Great Falls Center serves toasts, bowls, smoothies, juices and coffee, FFXnow reported ahead of its January opening. The Great Falls location page lists hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
For a sit-down evening, The Cellar on Seneca at 1025 Seneca Road has replaced the longtime BRX American Bistro. Its owners told FFXnow they planned a seasonal menu, monthly wine dinners and event space. L'Auberge Chez François is now owned by Reston-based Thompson Restaurants. The announcement said the menu, staff and executive chef would stay, according to FFXnow. Organizers sometimes change times, so check each event's page the week of.
